I recently found a contract that my former company was going to sign to hire me, but they didn't. They decided not to bring me on as a staff writer because the position wasn't the right fit for them. After reading their contract, I noticed that it had a lot of gray areas and could have been used by either party for legal purposes. As such, I took the time to draft an updated version of it from scratch with all of my suggestions included. This is what I came up with. This is the standard contract that will be used to hire any new employees. I'll go over it clause by clause, but first I want to point out some general changes that need to be made. 1) Any references to web copy should be changed to something more specific, like "web content" or web articles." 2) "Monthly" should be changed to either weekly or daily. "Monthly" is too vague and can lead to any number of variations in work schedules. 3) "Articles" should be changed to "posts." A post is something that's got its own page, with a title and body text. 4) Bullet point #2 needs to be reworked. I know they mean for this to apply only if the employee calls in sick or calls in with a problem, but it could also be argued that it applies in cases of emergency, meaning the employer is no longer obligated to pay the employee's wages if they are late by more than 30 minutes. If that's not what they want, then they need to re-word this provision. 5) The very last bullet point should be reworded in the way that it will provide an employee with an ample amount of time to catch up on their work. I believe in giving employees 48 hours to make up for missed work, even if they are sick or call in sick. This is the standard contract that will be used when the employer wants to pay an employee for their work. Everything in this document applies to both incoming and outgoing payments. 1) The very last bullet point should be reworded in the way that it provides an employee with enough time between receiving payment and the end of the month (so that they can take into account "taxes" and other things to pay). I believe in giving employees a month to do this. 2) The second-to-last bullet point should be reworded in the way that it first states that these bonuses are given on a monthly basis and then talk about how they can be paid out. I know they meant for this to apply only to employees who have been working for more than a month, but it could also be argued as applying to new hires as well. 3) In the second bullet point, the clause "-Any books or physical merchandise are non-returnable once signed by both parties." should be added at the end of the paragraph above it. cfa1e77820
